It’s funny how little thought we often give to spaces we spend so much time in. Outside of the place you work, chances are good that you’ll spend more time in your bedroom or home office than any place else. Even if you just sleep in your bedroom, that’s a third of your life.

Add in a home office and you can see time just slipping away in spaces that are usually not very well conceived. To make these areas of your home as inviting as possible, we’ve put together some proven design tips.

Focus on the base color. Your room should never be a circus act of colors, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be blasé either. Choose a single color that you like, and then play off of it. Build upon it with complementary colors, contrasting shades or fabrics that pick up the color in their weave.

Splurge on storage. Bedrooms and home offices require a lot of extra storage space, whether it’s for seasonal clothing or all the records you have to keep these days for taxes. Having the right kinds of storage will allow you to keep these spaces from being cluttered. Even a nightstand on each side of the bed with a couple of drawers can work wonders. If you have lots of office supplies, consider getting a cabinet with shelves, so you can hide your ink, paper, pens and other supplies until you need them.

Use warm flooring in the bedroom. If you live in the warmer south, tile or marble is fine. But if you live where the weather is seasonal, you won’t ever learn to enjoy getting out of bed in the middle of the night, only to set your feet on a cold floor. Better to go with carpet in your bedrooms. If you must have tile or marble, get an area rug for the floor next to your bed.

Keep it clean. Bedrooms or the home office are not storage areas. If they look like one, you won’t ever want to spend time in it. And if you do, you’ll always be distracted by the desire to clean up rather than get down to business, whether it’s paying the bills or a getting little extra shuteye.

Go green when possible. It’s easier than ever to add environmentally friendly touches to your bedrooms or home office. Not only can you get products made of jute, rattan, bamboos and rattan, but you can also buy products for the office or home that use recycled materials, such as old plastic milk bottles or aluminum.

Don’t cut corners. Remember that you’re spending a third of your life or more in these rooms in your home. This isn’t the place to buy cheap furniture. If you get a bargain basement mattress or inexpensive linens, you’ll pay for it with a poor night’s sleep. Same with the home office. If your office furniture isn’t comfortable, you won’t do your best work. Having an expensive dining room set is nice, but how often do you use it compared to your bed?

Consider your schedule. These days, people work around the clock. If you work swing or graveyard, you may want to go with darker shades or window treatments for the windows so your room stays dark when it’s light outside. If you work variable shifts, go with opaque shades or blinds instead so you can adjust the amount of light your bedroom receives.

Make it homey. Finally, make your bedroom or home office feel at home. Fill it with the things you love and the things that give you peace and serenity. Photos of family and friends, souvenirs, memories, artwork and other personal items are ideal for these two spaces. These are the private areas in your home, so make them uniquely yours. If you do, you’ll find you’ll spend more time there and get more done.

Decorating any room can be a very daunting proposition. While such things as flooring, window treatments and furniture can be a major expense, that’s no reason to take the safe route and resign yourself to rooms filled with various shades of beige.

To decorate with complete confidence in your choices, we’ve put together 10 helpful tips that will let you avoid most decorating mistakes while turning a ho-hum room in your house into a showplace.

1. Use something special for starters. Every room needs a focal point or a theme, if you will. Start with something you absolutely love, whether it’s an heirloom rug, a favorite piece of art or even a tea set your grandmother gave to you. From this, all the other answers will start coming to you quickly. And yes, designing smartly can be as easy as finding a single color, pattern or prized possession to build around.

2. Gather your options. Don’t pick your tile or carpeting without looking at your choices of furniture, paint colors and window treatments as well. They should be considered all together, not separately. You’ll rue the day that you picked out carpet over the weekend, only to find it was a shade or two off from the perfect sofa you found a month later.

3. Consistency counts. In an ideal world you don’t want to mix and match styles in your home. If you love modern, stick with it throughout. There’s nothing more jarring than having a home that’s done entirely in Victorian and then walking into a master suite that’s contemporary. Pick a style and stick with it.

4. Live with you choices. If at possible, borrow samples and live with them day and night. Colors and textures change with the lighting of a room and while you may love a color in the daylight, it may not be so lovely in the glare of interior lighting after the sun sets.

5. Color is free – Use it. Paint is a cheap way to redecorate a room. But you may be surprised that good wallpaper is just as cost effective and easy to apply. In fact, you can usually paper a room in a day that would take two or three days to prep and paint. And wallpaper is great at hiding the blemishes that require a lot of spackling and sanding if you were to paint instead.

6. Pick a single focus. Each room needs a focus – a single item. It could a fireplace, an antique piece of furniture, a stunning sofa, etc. Don’t give into temptation and confuse the eye with too many things to look at.

7. Watch the weather. The seasons can greatly influence your choices. In summer, people tend to pick dark floors, but choose light floors in winter. Be aware of seasonal influences, especially if you live in northern climes where the seasons can be very different from one another.

8. Showrooms are cavernous. Your home is not. Measure your spaces and measure the furniture you’re thinking about purchasing. Nothing looks worse than a piece of furniture (or artwork) that is too large or too small for the space you have available.

9. Don’t be a slave to fashion. That day-glo beanbag chair may look tempting, but don’t decorate according to the latest fashions or fads. Your home will end up looking just as dated as your wardrobe a year from now. Stick to the classics – woods, rich fabrics, stone and natural materials – and you’ll never be sorry.

10. Get help when you need it. No one expects you to be an expert in interior design, unless it was your major in college, of course. Ask others for help. They may have something in mind that you would have never thought of on your own because you’re too close to the situation.

With the economy as it is, a lot of homeowners are having to do with the home they have now rather than the house they want. But just because you’re in a reverse market these days and money is tight doesn’t mean you have to dread coming home every day.
Following are [...]

With the economy as it is, a lot of homeowners are having to do with the home they have now rather than the house they want. But just because you’re in a reverse market these days and money is tight doesn’t mean you have to dread coming home every day.

Following are some really great budget-conscious tips that can give your house a fresh new look for very little money.

Redistributing artwork. Many people purchase new art for their homes because they bored with what they have. Instead of going on a shopping spree, try moving your artwork around in your home instead. Then, use a little trick designers use to make each piece of art have maximum impact. When designers place art, they make sure it covers two-thirds of the wall it’s on. This keeps a really great painting, tapestry or other work of art from becoming lost on the wall. This is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make by the way. A great piece of art on a wall that is too big or too small is a décor disaster.

Layering with light. Lighting should be consistent and dramatic. The basic rule of thumb is 100 watts per 50 square feet of space in your home. Of course, a single 100-watt bulb isn’t the answer. It will look like you’re trying to get someone to confess to a crime. Instead, use different wattages in a mix of lighting fixtures, from the ceiling to the floor. Use dimmers whenever possible so you can change the mood of the room, from full up “the party’s on!” to nice and low lighting that says “romance.”

Paint a new look. Paint is by far the cheapest makeover you can do for your home and if you do it correctly, it can be a work of art all its own. For example, you can create a single accent wall in your home that has a contrasting color. Pick the right color on a wall that’s not too small and watch it magically create drama in a room that was rather bland before.

Go with area rugs. If your great room is feeling a little too spacious these days, go with area rugs. These can help define different spaces in the room. For example, adding an area rug under two chairs and a central table can create a quiet nook for conversation in a large room. You can also use area rugs and accent walls in combination to add more definition.

Time for tile. In the kitchen or bathroom, you can really make a splash with some carefully selected tiles. Use them as the backsplash along the counter or add the same pattern to the shower stall so the sink tile and shower tile share a common design theme. It will really make your bathroom pop.

Float the furniture. A room with all the furniture pushed back against the walls may be great for a dance party, but it isn’t very inviting for everyday use. Pull the furniture away from the walls and create spaces that emphasize specific functions. It will make the room much more friendly and approachable.

Get out of the box. This isn’t your mother’s home, so don’t think it has to follow any rules. It’s O.K to create a space that is unique and all yours. How about a bunch of leather books with a glass top used as a side table? Let your imagination run a little wild and reinvent your home with stuff you already have or find on the cheap. Be bold and decisive in your actions and you’ll be surprised how things can come together in your home.

With these few simple steps, your home can have that fresh new look you’ve been looking for. It’s one way to beat the “I’m stuck with the house I have for now” blues.

If you are in the market for new furniture for your Miami home, you may already know what type of furniture you need. Modern furniture in Miami is almost something that can be purchased without even thinking about it. Perhaps it is the culture of Miami or just the common knowledge that the city is so trendy and contemporary that lets you know modern furniture in Miami is the way to go.

With this large part of the decision making process out of the way, what else do you need to know before selecting modern furniture in Miami? Here are a few tips:

Know the Space

While you may look at a piece of modern furniture in the store, it can look a completely different size when you see it in your home. Often items are much larger than they appear in a showroom. So, before you begin shopping take measurements of the room you are going to put the piece in as well as measurements of the space you want the furniture item to fit in. Take these measurements with you when shopping.

Know the Colors

Know the colors of the room you are going to add modern furniture to so you can make sure the color scheme works. Take a note of the paint color you have selected as well as any accenting pieces that will be staying in the room to make sure it all matches up. When it comes to modern furniture in Miami, many stick with the traditional white accented with black and other bright colors. Something about Miami and the beaches, sunshine and carefree pace makes many choose items in white that make a home feel like they are always at a beach resort escape.

Know the Material

Another consideration you need to make is the materials used in the furniture pieces. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, when it comes to modern furniture in Miami, you have to remember it is a warm to hot climate. You don’t want materials that are going to make you feel even hotter and stickier on a hot summer day. You want something airy that breathes well.

Additionally, if you are eco-conscious, you may want to look for materials that are environmentally friendly or have been made of sustainable resources. Most companies that sell modern furniture in Miami realize the importance of this and will often make sure the labels brag their positive eco status.
